Barpeta Road Hospital Ends Free Care for Mothers of Four

Guwahati: Barpeta Road FRU Hospital will scrap free maternity care for women delivering their fourth child or more starting July 1. Hospital management committee president and MLA Ranjit Kumar Das revealed the shift during a June 21 event. Patients exceeding the three-child limit must now pay fees matching those at medical colleges.

Das pushed for the change to bolster state family planning efforts. He wants the Health Department and Minister Ashok Singhal to roll out this rule across all Assam government facilities. He argued that strict limits on free services will make the state program more successful. "Since the government has already adopted family planning measures, strict rules limiting free delivery services for families with more than three children would help make the state's family planning programme more effective and successful."

The Speaker also went after staff performance. He warned medical workers that he will not tolerate negligence. He told the public to report doctors who ditch their shifts or focus solely on private practice. Locals can send these complaints through village panchayat members or municipal board representatives to trigger official action.
