Aizawl: Mizoram's rail link is a success. One year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the 51.38-km Bairabi-Sairang line on September 13, 2025, the corridor has transformed transport in the region. Trains now reach the doorstep of Aizawl, ending the state's total reliance on road travel. The tracks handle freight and passengers alike.
Data shows the line completed 1,100 trips and moved 15 lakh passengers. Ticket sales pulled in Rs 54 crore for Indian Railways. Sairang station, the primary terminal, sees 3,300 people daily, totaling 5.54 lakh passenger movements over the year. The route connects Bairabi in Assam to Sairang via Hortoki, Kawnpui, and Mualkhang.
The engineering was grueling. The line bores through hills via 45 tunnels stretching 16 km and crosses 153 bridges. Six bridges tower over 70 metres, with the tallest reaching 114 metres. These feats bypass the region's notoriously difficult mountain terrain.
Long-distance travel is now easier. The Sairang-Anand Vihar Rajdhani Express offers the first premium link to Delhi. Other services reach Guwahati and Kolkata for schools and hospitals. In January 2026, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw added a Sairang-Silchar link. Officials claim the line has moved past basic infrastructure. It is now a primary logistics hub. They stated: "The railway line has moved beyond being an infrastructure project to becoming a key part of Mizoram's emerging logistics network."
Beyond transit, the station serves the community. Locals now lead tree planting and environmental efforts around the complex. The route provides a safer, cheaper alternative for shipping goods, construction materials, and vehicles into the state.
