Shillong: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ordered an end to mandatory post-mortems for flood victims on Tuesday. He wants to prioritize human compassion over red tape during the state's ongoing disaster. Families often wait days for procedures before they can hold funerals or claim state money.
Sarma declared on X that he is cutting the bureaucracy. "During a crisis, our response must be guided by compassion, not bureaucracy. I have directed that post-mortems be waived off for flood victims to spare families further anguish. Ex-gratia assistance will be released at the earliest, with no avoidable procedural delays," the Chief Minister said. Officials now have orders to push out compensation funds without delay.
Upper Assam is currently underwater from constant rain and rising rivers. Thousands of residents are displaced. Farms, roads, and infrastructure sit submerged under floodwaters. Relief camps provide water, food, and medicine to those forced from their homes.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority works alongside the State Disaster Response Force and the National Disaster Response Force to evacuate villages. Teams continue to drop essential supplies into marooned areas. District officials are now tracking flood damage to process relief payments faster. The state government remains on high alert as river levels stay dangerous.
