Guwahati: Assam has emerged as a premier destination for tourism and investment following a shift in its international reputation, according to the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party. BJP spokesperson Pranjal Kalita announced that the European Union officially withdrew its travel advisories and restrictions for citizens visiting the state on June 20. This decision follows a visit by EU representatives to Assam earlier in June.
Kalita attributed the shift to significant improvements in regional security, economic growth, and connectivity under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He noted that the withdrawal of these advisories, following similar actions by Australia and Japan, signals growing global confidence in Assam's stability. Kalita said, "The decision is expected to open new opportunities for Assam's tourism industry."
The state has seen a major increase in visitor numbers, with Kaziranga National Park recording approximately 5.48 lakh tourist visits during the 2025 to 2026 financial year. Airport data further underscores this accessibility, with more than seven million passengers traveling through Assam's airports last year. Increased tourism has bolstered the local economy, with the sector now contributing nearly ten percent to the state's Gross Domestic Product.
Government initiatives, including the development of local homestays and the inclusion of the region in the Buddhist tourism circuit, have further supported this growth. The state has also successfully expanded its reach by hosting international sporting events and concerts. These efforts are designed to attract younger visitors while fostering long-term social and economic stability across the region.
