Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the state is strictly enforcing its detect and deport policy after authorities successfully removed a Bangladeshi national who had entered the country illegally. Assam Police worked alongside the Border Security Force to apprehend the individual on May 15 before transferring them into the custody of the Border Guards Bangladesh.

This deportation reflects a broader push by the state government to address illegal immigration and land encroachment. Officials are currently working to reclaim over 1,250 square kilometres of government and forest land, with eviction operations already active in multiple districts.

These enforcement efforts arrive during ongoing debates regarding citizenship verification processes in the state. While the government moves forward with its land and border initiatives, some political figures remain critical of proposed surveys. The All India United Democratic Front has expressed opposition to new citizenship-related studies, arguing that the National Register of Citizens process was sufficiently comprehensive and should be viewed as final.
