Guwahati: Four traditional products from Assam have officially received Geographical Indication (GI) status from the Indian government. The newly recognized items include Karbi Anglong Handloom Products, Assam Bihu Pepa, Assam Bamboo Crafts, and Deuri Handloom Products. This milestone brings the total number of GI-certified products supported by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) in the state to 12.
These certifications provide legal protection for the region's indigenous crafts and cultural heritage. By securing official status, the products gain a distinct identity that helps prevent unauthorized use and improves market access for local artisans and weavers. The recognition spans diverse traditions, covering tribal weaving methods, bamboo craftsmanship, and the musical instrument essential to the state Bihu celebrations.
Loken Das, the Chief General Manager of NABARD Assam, emphasized that the initiative aims to boost the economic future of local craftspeople. He noted, "These certifications not only strengthen the identity and authenticity of these products but also enhance their market potential at national and international levels."
Beyond the legal recognition, NABARD is focused on creating sustainable, scalable, and profitable livelihoods for the thousands of people involved in these trades. The bank seeks to preserve the cultural significance of these goods while promoting rural development across Assam.
