Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently spotlighted Assam's indigenous agricultural heritage by gifting a sample of the state's aromatic Joha rice to Dr. Qu Dongyu, the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization. The gesture serves as a mark of the growing international recognition for the unique traditional produce originating from the region.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma praised the move, noting that it reflects the rising influence of the state on the global stage. Sarma described Joha as a small, scented grain variety that holds deep cultural significance for the people of Assam. It is widely prized in local households for its fragrance, soft texture, and distinct taste, especially during festive occasions.
Agricultural experts consider the rice a key cultural and geographical asset. Beyond its local use, the variety has attracted interest in niche and premium markets thanks to its specific flavor profile and traditional farming methods. The gift highlights the Prime Minister's ongoing efforts to promote India's indigenous products during his international diplomatic engagements.
