Guwahati: A drainage structure on the newly developed National Highway 127(B) in Assam has collapsed, fueling allegations of shoddy workmanship against contractor J Infratech Pvt. Ltd. The failure occurred in the Ujanpetla area of Tamarhat when a heavy dumper truck carrying materials for a nearby bypass caused the concrete drain and culvert to give way.
Residents who inspected the wreckage claim the damage exposed a lack of structural integrity in the multi-crore project. Local observers pointed to a visible shortage of iron reinforcement, the use of low-grade cement, and insufficient curing as primary reasons for the failure. One local account stated that the structure failed immediately as the vehicle attempted to cross the section, resulting in visible fractures and complete collapse of the drainage segment.
This incident has intensified existing community frustration, as neighbors claim this is not an isolated case. Similar drainage failures have reportedly surfaced at multiple points along the highway corridor. Beyond the immediate damage, the failing infrastructure has created dangerous conditions for motorists and pedestrians, leading to several reported minor accidents.
Community representatives are now calling for an independent structural audit by government engineering authorities to ensure public safety. Despite persistent complaints regarding the project's quality, residents state that no meaningful corrective action has been taken by the contractor. J Infratech Pvt. Ltd. had not provided an official response regarding the structural failures at the time of reporting.
