Assam Pushes for UNESCO Status to Boost Cultural Heritage

Shillong: Assam wants UNESCO status for Bihu, the Vaishnavite culture of Majuli, and the Ahom capital of Rangpur. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah laid out this plan during the 2026-27 Budget presentation in the state assembly on Friday. The state eyes cultural, natural, and intangible heritage categories to lift its profile on the world stage.

This drive builds on the success of the Charaideo Moidams, which already earned a UNESCO spot. Baruah said the state sees this as a milestone. "The proposed nominations would be taken up in phases and are expected to strengthen heritage conservation efforts while creating new opportunities for cultural tourism and global engagement," Baruah stated.

Work on the Rang Ghar Conservation Project will speed up immediately. Crews will also restore and upgrade facilities at Kareng Ghar. The state is setting aside cash for the Madhupur Satra, tied to the saint Srimanta Sankardeva, to fix up the site and build better pilgrim infrastructure. A new Assam Satra Commission will oversee these monastic traditions.

Cultural outreach remains a priority for the administration. New Delhi will host a massive Bihu festival to grab national attention. Officials also plan to fund commercial films about Lachit Barphukan and Kushal Konwar. Finally, the state will wrap up the Bhupen Hazarika birth centenary with a major event in the capital.
