Assam Power Department Fines Highway Contractor Over Illegal Electricity Theft

Guwahati: The Assam state electricity department has penalized J Infratech Private Limited for drawing unauthorized power at a construction site in the Dhubri district. The company, which is currently working on the National Highway 127-B project, received a fine of ₹20,408 following a raid by the Gosaigaon Electricity Sub-Division in the Tamarhat area.

Authorities discovered that the firm had been tapping directly into a high-capacity transformer for a significant period without obtaining official approval. Beyond the power theft, inspectors identified that the company was using subsidized domestic LPG cylinders at its labour camps. Commercial projects are legally required to use industrial-grade cylinders instead.

The surprise inspection caused several employees at the site to flee the scene as officials began documenting the violations. An anonymous worker stated that the staff were simply following directions from site management to keep the operation running.

This incident has sparked accusations of potential collusion between the contractor and local electricity department staff. While no official confirmation of internal involvement has been released, local residents and regional organizations are calling on the National Highways Authority to take severe action, including the possibility of blacklisting the firm. Further investigations into the project's conduct are expected as public criticism mounts.
