Guwahati: Assam Police smashed a theft ring in Dhubri this week, nabbing five suspects and seizing a mountain of stolen brass and bell metal goods. The arrests followed a brazen June 25 heist at the historic Harisabha Temple. CCTV footage of the break-in gave officers the lead they needed to track the thieves.

A special police team intercepted Rafiqul Islam and Ashok Ali, who spilled the details on a wider racket during questioning. They pointed investigators toward Jahirul Islam, a local receiver who bought the stolen loot. Police raided his Bogulamari home on July 3 and found a hoard of religious artifacts.

The authorities arrested Jahirul Islam, Dulal Ali, and Helal Ali shortly after the raid. All five suspects are now cooling their heels in lockup at the Dhubri Sadar Police Station. Officers are currently pressing the group for details on other unsolved town break-ins.

Dhubri Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Pritam Das hailed the win. "The rising incidents of theft had been a major concern for the residents of Dhubri. This successful operation not only solves the Harisabha Temple theft case but also disrupts a major network of thieves and receivers operating in the region," Das stated.
