Guwahati: A PMAY beneficiary in Assam claims she faced a bribe demand of Rs 20,000 to move forward with her housing grant. Rahima Khatun, a resident of Nagaon district, says she needed the cash to finish geo-tagging her property. This step is mandatory to unlock the second payment of her government building funds.

Khatun filed a formal complaint at the Juria Police Station. She pointed the finger at Jiyabur Rahman, the husband of the local panchayat president, and a panchayat accountant named Aminul Islam. The complaint states the two men demanded the money before they would verify the progress of her construction. Khatun received an initial payment of Rs 32,500 six months ago, which she spent on the house foundation.

Local police registered the case and started digging into the facts. The family is now waiting for word on the investigation. Officials say the next steps depend on what the inquiry turns up. Regarding the ordeal, the family explained they were "threatened and asked to pay Rs 20,000" simply to keep their project alive.
