Guwahati: Assam plans to shift Sivasagar farmers to alternative crops after catastrophic floods ruined their land. Minister Pijush Hazarika confirmed the move during a recent press conference. State officials are now working with the Agriculture and Irrigation departments to weigh the damage.
The numbers are grim. Floods impacted roughly one lakh families across the district. Nearly 60,000 of those households suffered direct damage to crops and farmland. Many will likely miss the entire growing season. "Many people may not be able to cultivate their fields this year due to the impact of the floods. Therefore, the state government is considering alternative farming options," Hazarika said.
The government already started shipping paddy seeds and seedlings to help the survivors get back to work. Officials also intend to supply fruit saplings and prepare for upcoming rabi crop cycles. Teams will draft a final list of losses to guide future relief efforts. This strategy aims to stabilize livelihoods and blunt the long-term impact of the disaster on local farmers.
