Guwahati: The All Assam Motor Transport Association plans to increase passenger transport fares across the state by 70 percent beginning July 1. This decision follows years of rising fuel prices and mounting operational expenses that have strained the industry.

Association leaders submitted a memorandum to the Assam Transport Commissioner requesting relief from these financial pressures. The last major fare revision occurred in November 2011, when the transport department granted a 25 percent hike while diesel prices stood at approximately Rs 66 per litre. Operators claim they have maintained services for the past 14 years despite significant inflation and rising costs for vehicle maintenance and spare parts.

Under the new structure, the minimum bus fare will rise to Rs 20. The association stated that the adjustment is essential to keep services operational, noting that "many operators were facing financial difficulties under current conditions." Further details regarding specific routes and vehicle categories will be released in a separate announcement.
