Guwahati: Assam officials moved to strip away red tape. The state cabinet cleared plans to allow automatic conversion of agricultural land for micro-industries and solar projects. This bypasses the old hurdle of seeking permission from district commissioners. The changes arrive via the Assam Regulation of Re-classification and Re-classification-cum-Transfer of Lands (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma pushed the reforms during a June 23 meeting. He signaled a clear intent to move the state forward. "The Cabinet approved the Assam Regulation of Re-classification and Re-classification-cum-Transfer of Lands (Amendment) Bill, 2026," Sarma said. Lawmakers will see the bill during the next assembly session.
Education and tourism get a lift too. Private universities will face fewer land requirements and lower endowment fund hurdles. The state also eased rules for private schools to spark growth. Tourism operators gain a single-window system for homestays, featuring automatic renewals every three years.
The cabinet set aside 9.75 crore for the Assam Tea Corporation Limited. This cash covers a voluntary retirement scheme for company executives. Meanwhile, fair price shops caught a break. Licensing deadlines shifted from June 30 to December 31, 2026, to keep foodgrains moving to residents.
