Guwahati: Assam is bringing its small tea growers into the digital fold. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that tea and plantation land now sits on the state Farmers Registry Portal. Growers can get Farmer IDs. This move links them directly to government welfare schemes, fertilizer supplies, and institutional credit.

The state wants to cut out the middlemen. The industry currently keeps the tea sector under the Department of Industry, but this change lets growers tap into Agriculture Department benefits. Chief Minister Sarma called it a significant step for the community. The system clears a path for faster agricultural services and financial support.

Agriculture Minister Pijush Hazarika emphasized the push to get every eligible grower online. Small growers now produce nearly half of the tea in the state. Data from Tea Board India shows that as of March 31, 2025, Assam hosted 133,864 small tea growers across 126,107 hectares of land.
