Guwahati: Assam Minister for Public Health Engineering, Hill Areas and Barak Valley Development, Krishnendu Paul, held a high-level meeting at the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council Secretariat on June 12. The session centered on the district's readiness for monsoon-related emergencies, such as floods, landslides, and storms, following directives from the state government to reinforce safety systems.
District Disaster Management Authority officials briefed the minister on their current preventive strategies and emergency response protocols. During the review, the minister also examined the progress of water supply schemes, specifically the implementation of the central government's Har Ghar Nal Se Jal programme under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Local representatives, including MLA Rupali Langthasa, pointed out the difficulties of executing projects in hill terrain and requested more thorough site surveys.
Minister Paul committed to investigating any non-functional water projects and urged departments to improve their inter-agency coordination. Addressing concerns over project delays, he ordered strict accountability measures for contractors who fail to perform their duties. Paul stated that his visit was designed to assess the region's communication infrastructure and overall development, noting, "The visit was aimed at assessing disaster preparedness, communication infrastructure and emergency response mechanisms, besides reviewing the district's overall developmental and administrative progress."
The meeting included participation from Chief Executive Member of the NCHAC Debolal Gorlosa, Council Chairman Mohit Hojai, and various senior government officials. Participants also evaluated local solid waste management practices, discussing potential improvements to current collection and disposal systems.
