Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced a comprehensive Rs 1,459 crore initiative to address Guwahati's persistent flash flooding. The state government plans to modernize the city's drainage infrastructure to better handle intense rainfall caused by shifting climate patterns and the city's unique bowl-shaped geography.

The project includes a GIS-based management system designed to regulate water flow during heavy downpours. Funding is split between two primary areas: Rs 500.95 crore is designated for the Bahini Basin Project, while Rs 958.10 crore will support the Bharalu Basin Project. These improvements aim to enhance overall drainage efficiency across flood-prone neighborhoods.

Planned technical upgrades include the construction of an automated pumping station at Bharalumukh and the development of smart reinforced concrete drainage systems. The government is also prioritizing river rejuvenation projects as part of its effort to build a flood-free city through scientific planning and modern technology.
