Guwahati: Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota held a high-level meeting in Guwahati on Thursday to strengthen road safety and accident prevention across the state. Joined by DGP Harmeet Singh and various district officials, Kota called for a renewed focus on accident-prone corridors through data-driven intervention plans and stricter enforcement.
Recent data indicates progress in state safety efforts, with reports showing a 15 percent drop in accidents and a 30 percent decrease in fatalities between late April and May 2026 compared to the previous year. Despite these gains, officials identified National Highways as primary concern areas for high accident rates, leading to directives for better engineering corrections, improved emergency response systems, and the elimination of unauthorized roadside parking and encroachments.
The state is prioritizing the PM RAHAT initiative and the Zero Fatality District program to improve trauma care and coordination for victims. Authorities also highlighted the need for more first responder training to optimize response times during the critical golden hour. As the monsoon season approaches, districts have been told to maintain high vigilance, particularly in flood-prone and border regions.
The Transport Department is moving forward with the Chota COP awareness campaign and the installation of Automated Driver Testing Tracks to improve licensing transparency. Officials also plan to establish a clear regulatory framework for e-rickshaw operations. Furthermore, district administrations must now monitor toll plaza compliance regarding ambulance access and keep a close watch on licensing processes to prevent procedural irregularities.
