Guwahati: Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya announced plans to establish a specialized counter-radicalisation cell during his address to the state assembly on Friday. The initiative aims to protect vulnerable youth from extremist ideologies while fostering national unity, social harmony, and adherence to constitutional values.
During his first address to the 16th Assam Assembly, the Governor emphasized the state's commitment to protecting the identity, land rights, and security of indigenous and tribal communities. He pledged to strengthen administrative and legal frameworks over the next five years to address demographic concerns and prevent illegal land encroachment. Additionally, the government intends to curb cross-border issues like organized cattle smuggling.
The Governor also outlined plans to expedite the identification and deportation of illegal immigrants by implementing the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act of 1950. He welcomed recent cooperation from the West Bengal government regarding land access for border fencing, which he noted will help secure remaining gaps along the international boundary.
The session faced brief disruption as members of the Congress and Raijor Dal staged a walkout. Shortly after the speech began, these opposition lawmakers entered the well of the House to demand that the government prioritize addressing economic concerns like inflation.
