Assam Government Seeks Extension in Guwahati Flood Safety Case

Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court granted the Assam government additional time to file an affidavit regarding the persistent hazards posed by open drains and manholes in Guwahati. The state requested a one-week extension after failing to meet the original court-imposed deadline. This ongoing legal matter stems from a Public Interest Litigation focused on systemic flooding and the dangerous state of municipal infrastructure during heavy rainfall.

Judges expressed deep concern over the threat these exposed sewer channels and manholes pose to public safety. The court previously ordered the Guwahati Municipal Corporation and relevant state departments to implement immediate protective measures by covering all hazardous drainage points. These legal proceedings intensified following a severe April flooding incident where four people died across the city due to dangerous water logging.

The High Court continues to monitor the government's progress on flood management and civic safety. Officials are expected to outline both completed actions and future plans to address these urban infrastructure failures in their forthcoming response.
