Guwahati: Assam officials met at Janata Bhawan to overhaul the city's crumbling stormwater management. Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Kaushik Rai led the high-level review of the GIS-based drainage master plan and the project report for the Bahini-Bharalu Basin. Floods hit the city every monsoon. The system is failing.

Technical experts and consultants picked apart the proposed interventions during the meeting. They weighed the long-term effectiveness of the drainage fixes against the city's current capacity. Rai told his team to scrap the current drafts and rework them based on these new observations. He expects a more resilient framework that can handle extreme weather events.

Rai demanded accountability from every department involved in the project. He warned that any revised proposal must undergo a grueling reassessment to expose technical gaps before the state signs off on the final construction. The minister emphasized the urgency of the task while addressing the committee. “The need for a practical and resilient drainage framework capable of effectively mitigating waterlogging across the city remains the priority. Everyone needs to work together now. City infrastructure is on the line.”

Consultants now have a deadline to refine their work. Officials want the project finished without further technical hitches or delays.
