Guwahati: The Assam government has issued a firm directive requiring medical stores to remain open during the nationwide chemists' strike scheduled for May 20. The mandate, issued by the Office of the Drugs Controller, clarifies that any interruption to the supply of life-saving medication is unacceptable and will not be permitted.

The order specifically targets several types of outlets that must maintain regular business hours. These include Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendras, AMRIT pharmacies, and medical stores located within government or private hospitals. Additionally, generic medicine outlets and any pharmacies not affiliated with the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists or its local state chapters are expected to operate as usual.

Officials have warned that shops closing in violation of these instructions face penalties under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act of 1940. Potential consequences for those failing to comply include the suspension or total cancellation of their operating licenses. Drug Inspectors have been tasked with monitoring the situation across all districts to ensure these services remain available to the public.

To support those keeping their doors open, the state administration has instructed police and local authorities to protect these businesses from any coercion or disruption. District offices are also tasked with sharing lists of functional pharmacies and contact information for officials to assist residents during emergencies. These combined measures aim to prioritize patient safety and maintain consistent access to critical healthcare services throughout the protest period.
