Guwahati: The Government of Assam has demoted an Assam Civil Service officer following a formal disciplinary inquiry. Sangeeta Borthakur, a member of the DR-15 batch currently serving as a Deputy Secretary in the Labour Welfare Department, faced proceedings under the Assam Services Discipline and Appeal Rules of 1964.

Authorities initiated the process on February 4, 2025, by issuing a show-cause notice to the officer. An appointed inquiry officer investigated the charges and ultimately concluded that they were proven. Although Borthakur provided a written response to these findings, the government rejected her explanation, noting it lacked convincing grounds after a review of the evidence.

Acting on the inquiry report, the Governor of Assam imposed a penalty of reduction to a lower rank for three years. Borthakur has been moved from her role as Deputy Secretary to the position of Under Secretary within the same department. This change in status takes effect immediately.
