Assam Flood Death Toll Hits 66 as Relief Efforts Surge

Guwahati: The flood death toll in Assam has hit 66. One victim died in Guwahati Urban alone. Over seven lakh people remain displaced across 12 districts. Sivasagar is currently the worst-hit area, where floodwaters destroyed hundreds of villages and dozens of revenue circles.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a 12-crore rupee relief drive on July 26. He expects the party to raise these funds within five days. The BJP plans to distribute 2 lakh Mekhela-Chadors to women and clothing to 2 lakh children. Relief supplies will head to Sivasagar, Charaideo, Golaghat, and Jorhat.

Sarma told local BJP workers to lead the charge. Supporters donating under 2,000 rupees should hand cash to local MLAs. Larger donations go straight to a party bank account. BJP members nationwide have pledged support for the initiative.

Actor Bhumi Pednekar is calling for national aid. She shared videos showing massive displacement and destroyed homes. She told followers, "Whatever they had, everything is finished." Pednekar emphasized that victims urgently need food, mattresses, sanitation, and evacuation. She compared the disaster to previous floods in Punjab and Gujarat.

The Bharat Disaster Relief Foundation thanked Pednekar for her support. Singer Nilotpal Bora also backed her appeal. Meanwhile, the office of the Chief Minister publicly thanked the actor for standing with the state. The situation remains critical.
