Guwahati: Floodwaters are rising in Assam. Nearly 47,000 people are now caught in a worsening deluge across six districts. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority confirmed the first death of the season after a woman was swept away in Dhemaji. That district remains the hardest hit.
Total destruction spans 221 villages. Floodwaters have wiped out over 3,809 hectares of farmland, burying paddy fields in silt just as the planting season begins. More than 88,000 animals are also caught in the rising water. Roads and public infrastructure face heavy damage.
The Brahmaputra and Disang rivers continue to flow above the danger mark. Officials have opened four relief camps to house over 450 displaced residents. Water Resources Minister Susanta Borgohain and Revenue Minister Keshab Mahanta are inspecting the damage near the Chakrang River.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says the state is working to provide aid. In a post on X, he stated, "We are leaving no stone unturned in our flood response. While I continue to monitor the situation closely, my Cabinet colleagues are on the ground overseeing relief efforts, protection measures and ensuring timely assistance." The government is keeping a close watch as more rain threatens the region.
