Guwahati: Crews razed the Unit-I fertilizer plant in Namrup this week. It stood for over fifty years. The site was India's first natural gas-based fertilizer facility. It finally came down to make room for a new project.

Namrup-I opened for business on January 1, 1969. It fueled agricultural growth across the Northeast for generations. The demolition crew cleared the old structure to prepare the site for the Assam Valley Fertilizer and Chemical Company Limited. This joint venture plans to build a high-tech ammonia-urea plant on the same plot.

The state expects the new facility to boost domestic production. Officials say the plant will better support local farming needs than the ageing unit. As the site clears, it marks the end of a long industrial era for Assam. The facility's legacy is plain. "The demolition of the landmark unit marks the end of one of Assam's oldest industrial facilities, which remained in operation for more than five decades."
