Guwahati: The Assam Crime Branch has issued a formal summons to senior Congress leader and Member of Parliament Randeep Singh Surjewala. He is required to appear before investigators in Guwahati on May 23 to provide testimony regarding an ongoing probe into the passport records of Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

This development follows a similar interrogation of Congress leader Pawan Khera, who spent several hours with the Crime Branch earlier this month. Khera, who is expected to return for further questioning on May 25, previously alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma held multiple passports from India, the UAE, and Egypt, alongside claims of overseas property ownership. These accusations led to the filing of criminal complaints against Khera under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The Sarma family has consistently refuted these allegations, characterizing the circulated documents as fabrications created by artificial intelligence and disseminated through foreign social media networks. While the Congress party maintains that the police investigation is politically motivated, the BJP asserts that the inquiry is a necessary step to ensure public accountability.
