Guwahati: The Assam Crime Branch has issued a formal summons to senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala, requesting his appearance on May 23. This development is part of an ongoing investigation into allegations involving Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The controversy originated from claims made by Congress leader Pawan Khera, who alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma holds passports from the UAE, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. Because Indian law prohibits dual citizenship, these claims have raised significant questions regarding her legal status. Furthermore, Khera alleged that the family owns a Wyoming-based company valued at approximately 53,000 crore rupees and accused the Chief Minister of failing to disclose properties in Dubai within his election affidavits.

Following these accusations, Khera publicly called for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to initiate a formal investigation into the matter to ensure accountability. While reports indicate that Surjewala mentioned Pawan Khera during the progression of the case, other claims suggest that Surjewala and party colleague Gaurav Gogoi may have played a role in orchestrating the controversy. However, investigating authorities have yet to provide any official confirmation regarding the alleged involvement of these political figures.
