Guwahati: The Koch Rajbanshi Citizens Forum hit the streets in Golakganj to fight the state government's plan to rename a main bazaar road after Shyama Prasad Mukherjee. Locals want the move scrapped immediately. They argue that public landmarks should honor the families who actually built the region, not outside figures.
Protesters point to the Prodhani Zamindar family. This family donated much of the land under the current bazaar and its connecting roads. The forum slammed local Cabinet Minister Ashwini Roy for his silence on the matter, claiming the community gets ignored once election season ends.
Jyotirmoy Prodhani, a professor at North Eastern Hill University and a descendant of the Zamindar family, questioned why the government picked Mukherjee. He pointed to historical records that suggest Mukherjee pushed to merge Cooch Behar with West Bengal, a stance that clashed with local leaders like Gopinath Bordoloi who fought for regional identity.
The forum claims that Mukherjee held negative views toward their people during past political debates. Jyotirmoy Prodhani stated, "The naming of public infrastructure should reflect local history, indigenous identity and the contribution of the Prodhani Zamindar family." Residents now wait for a formal response from the government to see if the road name remains or gets wiped from the map.
