Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says the Congress-led opposition faced electoral losses for trying to turn the death of musician Zubeen Garg into a political issue. During a visit to the memorial site at Kamarakuchi in Sonapur, Sarma argued that the singer’s legacy should remain separate from partisan agendas. He noted that voters rejected the opposition's strategy after the polls concluded.

Sarma characterized Garg as a beloved figure who held a special place in the hearts of the public. He accused opposition leaders of attempting to leverage Garg's name for votes despite having little connection to the artist while he was alive. The Chief Minister maintained that his own visit was a personal gesture of respect rather than a political act.

The death of the 52-year-old singer in Singapore last September became a central topic during the recent Assembly elections. Congress and its allies had campaigned on promises to expedite legal proceedings and criticized the BJP for not sending national leadership to pay respects at the site. The opposition had specifically pledged to secure justice within 100 days of taking office.

During his visit, Sarma reviewed the progress of construction at the memorial site, known as Zubeen Khetra. He noted that work is currently focused on stabilizing the area to prevent landslides. Once the boundary wall is finished, officials plan to proceed with the main development of the memorial to ensure it serves as a permanent tribute to the singer.
