Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that the Congress-led Opposition suffered politically in the recent Assembly elections for attempting to politicize the death of singer Zubeen Garg. Sarma made these remarks on Wednesday after visiting Zubeen Khetra, the musician's memorial site in Sonapur, to pay tribute and inspect ongoing construction progress.

Zubeen Garg passed away at age 52 last September while swimming in Singapore. During the recent election campaign, opposition parties criticized the state government regarding the timeline for a fast-track court to handle the case. They had pledged to provide justice for the singer within 100 days of taking office and questioned the lack of presence from national BJP leaders at the memorial site.

Sarma dismissed these campaign tactics, noting that some politicians abandoned the topic immediately after the polls closed. He claimed that many of those who visited the shrine lacked a genuine connection to the artist during his life. Describing the singer as an evergreen emotion for the people of Assam, Sarma insisted that the artist should remain above political discourse.

During his visit, the Chief Minister assessed development at the cremation site. He confirmed that initial work has started, including steps to prevent potential landslides. The primary construction at the Samadhi Khetra is expected to move forward systematically once the boundary wall is finished.
