Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has identified the recent surge in petrol and diesel prices as a significant concern for both the public and the state government. During a live social media address on June 14, he attributed the rising costs to global geopolitical instability, particularly conflicts in West Asia, which have disrupted energy markets. India relies on imports for nearly 90 percent of its crude oil, leaving domestic prices vulnerable to international fluctuations.

Sarma expressed hope that diplomatic efforts could stabilize the situation, noting, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been making efforts to minimise the impact of rising fuel costs on ordinary citizens and ensure that people are protected from global market fluctuations to the greatest extent possible." He also acknowledged that global economic uncertainties have placed financial pressure on the state government following the recent elections.

Beyond economic concerns, the Chief Minister detailed several upcoming development initiatives. He confirmed that cash transfers under the Orunodoi scheme will resume in early August alongside the distribution of essential ration supplies. Infrastructure projects are also moving forward, with the tender for the Gohpur-Numaligarh tunnel expected to be finalized within the month. Plans include expanding the road network with a new four-lane route and an express highway connecting Siliguri to Silchar.

Sarma reiterated the administration's commitment to job creation and educational development, aiming to establish a medical college in every district. He also highlighted the Kamakhya Corridor project and announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Guwahati between July 1 and July 3.
