Assam Budget Shortfall Keeps Cotton School Uniforms Off the Table

Guwahati: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu confirmed on June 27 that the state cannot afford 100 percent cotton school uniforms. Tight department budgets keep the current material at 70 percent polyester and 30 percent cotton. Parents and students previously complained about the synthetic fabric.

Increasing cotton content drives up manufacturing expenses. Higher quality fabric requires more funding. "As the percentage of polyester decreases, the cost of the uniforms increases. For that, we need a higher budget," the minister said.

Higher education funding faces similar delays. The government released 90 percent of the cash for free college and university admissions before the current Assembly session. The state will wire the final 10 percent once the Assembly passes the new budget.
