Guwahati: Assam lawmakers will soon have more cash to spend in their districts. The state government raised the annual Member of Legislative Assembly Local Area Development fund from Rs 1 crore to Rs 1.5 crore starting in the 2026-27 financial year. By 2027-28, that annual limit climbs to Rs 2 crore per MLA.

Officials confirmed the change in a June 25 notification. The move overhauls the 2013 scheme guidelines. Lawmakers can now earmark 10 per cent of their yearly budget for new items. This list includes sports gear, musical instruments, and furniture for schools or public offices. It also covers electrical upgrades like water purifiers and lighting.

The policy change hits hard on disability support. MLAs can now fund wheelchairs, hearing aids, tricycles, and other walking tools for those in need. The government order notes: "Assistance to individual beneficiaries will be routed only through the district administration after due verification."

Tight rules govern the new spending. District commissioners must track every asset in official stock registers. Funds cannot go directly to private people or outside groups. All purchases must follow standard financial rules to ensure assets remain in public hands. The revised guidelines are active right now.
