Guwahati: Students who failed the 2026 HSLC exam face a strict new mandate. The Assam State School Education Board ordered these pupils to secure re-admission into Class X to qualify for future attempts. The board issued the directive on June 23.

Failed students should return to their original school. If space is tight, they can sign up at another school within their existing examination center. Candidates keep their original registration numbers. They can swap elective subjects, but only before the half-yearly exams hit the calendar. The board warns: "No subject changes will be permitted after the half-yearly exams."

New schools take over responsibility for practical assessments and internal grading. Every re-admitted student must sit for the half-yearly test. Skipping this step bars a student from the next HSLC exam. Principals must track attendance and force extra remedial classes on those falling behind. Every school needs to wrap up the re-admission process by August 14, 2026.
