Guwahati: Assam BJP president Dilip Saikia launched a scathing attack on the Congress party today. He blamed the 1975 Emergency on a desperate need to hold office. Saikia called the move one of the darkest times for Indian democracy.
He claimed the party ignored constitutional norms to crush dissent. The Emergency started on June 25, 1975. Indira Gandhi advised the move. President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed signed off on it.
Saikia claimed over one lakh political workers faced arrest. The state banned the RSS. It jailed leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani. Saikia noted the Allahabad High Court had previously invalidated Indira Gandhi’s election. Rather than resign, she chose control. "The proclamation of the Emergency stands as one of the most reprehensible examples of the Congress Party's determination to cling to power at any cost," Saikia said.
The BJP marked June 25 as a Black Day. Guwahati hosted a large event at Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra. Officials honored 41 Loktantra Senanis. These people went to jail fighting for democracy. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the ceremony. He joined other party leaders to call for the protection of constitutional values.
