Guwahati: Assam has officially entered the Matcha market. The Chota Tingrai Tea Estate in Tinsukia district is now the first site in India to produce the powdered green tea commercially.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed the news on Friday. He highlighted how the move expands the state's traditional offerings. "Your favourite Matcha brew will now be produced in Assam. Furthering our glorious tea legacy, Assam becomes the first state in India to commercially produce Matcha tea at the Chota Tingrai Tea Estate in Tinsukia," Sarma said.

The shift follows a ten-year partnership with Japan. Experts brought specific machinery and production methods to local growers to make this possible. The state now hopes to use this international link to boost the global profile of the Assam Tea brand.

Market demand is already showing teeth. The initial batch fetched 13,000 rupees at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre. Officials expect this to open fresh doors for local producers looking to tap into a high-end market.
