Guwahati: Authorities cracked down on a wildlife trafficking ring in Assam, nabbing three suspects at the Segun Bagan resort in Sonapur. The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau and Sonapur Forest Division teamed up for the late-night raid after receiving intelligence about illegal deals. The operation stopped the trade cold.
Officers arrested Chandan Nath, Chandan Kumar Nath, and Dipjyoti Barman from the Nalbari district. They seized a 920-gram rhino horn hidden at the scene. Investigators also took a Tata Nexon vehicle, a laptop, several ATM cards, and four mobile phones as evidence. The suspects allegedly used the resort as a permanent base for their smuggling activities.
Sonapur Range Officer Bhargab Hazarika credited the sting to precision and teamwork. "The operation was successful due to timely intelligence inputs. We remain committed to curbing wildlife crimes in the region," Hazarika said. The agency is currently digging into the horn's origin and searching for other members of the network.
The trio faces charges under the Wild Life Protection Act of 1972. They will soon stand before a judge as the investigation continues.
