Guwahati: Ankita Konwar made history this week. The Assam athlete became the first woman from Northeast India to cross the English Channel. She swam as part of an international relay team that moved from Dover, England, to Calais, France.
The team hit the water at 1:30 am. They finished the crossing at 2:35 pm. The entire journey took 13 hours and 5 minutes. Officials handed out medals to the swimmers following the feat. The channel is notorious for freezing water, strong currents, and wild weather shifts.
Konwar only learned to swim three years ago. Her rise in endurance sports is rapid. She already finished a Full Ironman in Barcelona and competed in the T100 Triathlon in Dubai.
Reflecting on the swim, Konwar said, "The English Channel is far more than a swim—it's a journey of resilience, teamwork and trusting yourself when nature tests every ounce of your spirit. If someone like me, who wasn't even a swimmer once, can stand here today, then anything is possible with consistency and courage."
She hopes her success pushes more young women to chase big goals. Konwar is already training for her next test. She refuses to slow down.
