Shillong: The governments of Assam and Meghalaya are actively engaged in negotiations to settle their long-standing interstate border dispute through peaceful and collaborative means. BJP legislator and Pynthorumkhrah representative, AL Hek, emphasized that both states are committed to reaching a conclusive agreement without succumbing to political pressure or confrontational tactics.

Addressing reporters in Shillong, Hek clarified that while the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government faces varying degrees of political pressure from both sides, the administration remains focused on a non-confrontational approach. He noted that the process involves the establishment of district-level border committees, led by legislators from diverse political backgrounds, to manage disputes in areas such as Block I, Block II, and the Ri Bhoi district.

The resolution process is multifaceted, requiring a move beyond simple discussions to rigorous field verification. Hek stressed that the complexity of the land disputes necessitates on-the-ground study and collaboration with central government survey teams. He maintained that these efforts must be conducted through official government-to-government channels rather than individual party initiatives.

Regarding the status of regional infrastructure, Hek acknowledged that border fencing is necessary for Meghalaya, similar to requirements in other states like West Bengal. However, he clarified that current efforts are focused on untangling the complex web of land disputes through institutional mechanisms to ensure a sustainable and lasting peace for residents living in the border regions.
