Itanagar: Villagers in Arunachal Pradesh took matters into their own hands to save a vanishing fish. Nine members of the Sangno clan from Weshi village trekked to Lapabung stream to collect 52 Schizothorax pelzami fingerlings. This species, known locally as Ngarsing, now faces a major habitat expansion effort.
The team moved the fish to Richaso stream on June 29. They worked under the guidance of Rani Sono Diyw and secured permission from the Talo Welfare Society before starting the mission. The group chose specific stretches of the water that mahseer cannot reach. This keeps the predatory fish away from the vulnerable newcomers.
Head Gaon Bura Gajali Sangno led the operation. He wants the Weshi Welfare Society to strictly enforce a fishing ban for five years to allow the population to grow. "The initiative was aimed at conserving the endangered species by establishing a new habitat in a stream where the fish had not previously existed," the organizers stated. This move gives the fish a fighting chance to breed in safety.
