Itanagar: The government of Arunachal Pradesh reached an agreement this Wednesday with Greenko Demwe Power Ltd to construct the 1,750-MW Demwe Lower Hydroelectric Project. This collaboration stands as one of the largest private sector hydroelectric developments in the state to date.

The facility will be built on the Lohit river, specifically near the sites of Parasuram Kund and Brahma Kund. It will feature a concrete gravity dam standing 163.12 metres tall with a crest length of 474.35 metres. The site is designed to hold 516.38 million cubic metres of water within a reservoir spanning 1,131 hectares.

Technical specifications for the plant include five 342-MW generating units and an additional 40-MW unit. These will be supported by six diversion tunnels, underground pressure shafts, and a large surface powerhouse equipped with Vertical Francis Turbines. Officials expect the project to generate roughly 7,326 million units of electricity every year, which will bolster India's overall energy security.

Beyond power generation, the government anticipates significant socio-economic advantages for the region. The project is expected to create new jobs, improve local infrastructure and connectivity, and stimulate broader economic activity throughout Arunachal Pradesh.
