Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Agriculture and Horticulture Minister Gabriel D. Wangsu has called on the central government to increase support for the Northeast’s agricultural sector. Speaking at the National Conference on Agriculture for Kharif Campaign 2026 in New Delhi, Wangsu emphasized that timely funding and better access to quality seeds are essential for regional food security.

Wangsu urged officials to ensure the prompt release of funds for seed-related schemes. He argued that certified seed varieties must be better aligned with the specific agro-climatic conditions of the Northeast. To achieve this, he proposed that local and regional enterprises receive more support to produce specialized, indigenous seeds that often outperform external varieties in local environments.

Addressing the difficulties faced by farmers in remote areas, the minister requested expanded assistance under the Seed Village Programme and the Sub-Mission on Seed and Planting Material. He pointed out that the high cost of quality seeds prevents many cultivators from adopting them, necessitating greater financial aid for infrastructure, training, and distribution networks.

Regarding sustainable growth, Wangsu highlighted that Arunachal Pradesh is naturally suited for organic farming. He expressed his state's commitment to expanding bio-based crop protection in alignment with the national Mission Organic initiative. To bolster these efforts, he proposed a dedicated federal scheme specifically for organic crop protection to help farmers transition to more environmentally friendly practices.
