Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh now holds the record for the highest elephant range globally. A comprehensive assessment by WWF-India and the State Forest Department confirmed the presence of elephants at elevations reaching 3,000 metres above sea level.

Conducted between December 2024 and March 2026, the study highlights the state as a critical biodiversity hotspot within the Eastern Himalaya region. Researchers mapped herd movement patterns and identified essential wildlife corridors to better understand how these animals navigate the state's diverse, mountainous landscape.

The data also pinpoints areas prone to human-elephant conflict, providing a roadmap for future mitigation efforts. By documenting these populations, the report emphasizes the necessity of protecting Arunachal's forests and high-altitude zones, which remain vital habitats for tigers, Asian elephants, and other endangered species.
