Itanagar: Authorities in Arunachal Pradesh have implemented a one-month ban on the trade and transport of live pigs and pork products in the Longding district. The emergency measure follows the detection of African Swine Fever in the neighboring Tinsukia district of Assam. District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Officer O Moyong confirmed the restrictions apply to all purchases and shipments originating from Assam or other affected areas.
Officials warned that residents, farmers, and traders who fail to comply with the order face potential penalties under the Prevention and Control of Infectious and Contagious Diseases in Animals Act, 2009. The administration is urging the public to adhere to these rules to protect the local pig population, which serves as a vital source of livelihood for many rural households.
The district veterinary department has mandated strict biosecurity protocols for all local farms. Farmers must now install disinfectant footbaths at barn entrances, restrict access for visitors and vehicles, and use dedicated clothing while working with livestock. Additionally, authorities have prohibited the practice of swill feeding, where pigs are fed kitchen waste, as it is considered a primary transmission route for the virus.
Livestock owners are tasked with monitoring their animals for symptoms such as high fever, sudden death, skin hemorrhages, or lethargy. Any suspected cases must be isolated and reported immediately to veterinary officials. To prevent environmental spread, the disposal of carcasses in open spaces or water bodies is strictly forbidden. Instead, farmers must utilize approved burial methods involving lime treatment or incineration under professional supervision.
