Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh marked National Sports Day 2026 with a push for drug-free living under the banner Khel Se Jodo, Nasha Chhodo. Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kento Jini joined Namsai MLA C Z Namchoom in Itanagar to honor 102 athletes and coaches. They handed out Rs 50 lakh in total cash incentives. The state currently boasts 77 international medals won in recent months.
Minister Jini confirmed two Arunachal athletes are heading to the upcoming Asian Games. He views this as a major milestone. Arunachal now ranks second in the Northeast for sporting performance, trailing only Manipur. Jini remains confident his state will soon lead the region.
Youth Affairs Secretary Abu Tayeng reaffirmed the state’s commitment to backing its competitors. "The department would continue to support and recognise athletes and coaches for their contribution towards bringing pride to Arunachal Pradesh," Tayeng told India Today NE.
Mountaineer Kabak Yano urged young women to enter the field despite concerns about physical appearance. She insisted that athletic achievements outlast temporary skin changes. The event signals a wider government shift to build discipline and keep youth away from substance abuse through competitive sports.
