Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has formally raised concerns with the Assam government regarding reports that anti-drug activist Gumin Mize suffered custodial torture. The matter gained public attention after images and videos surfaced online showing injuries on Mize while he was held in police custody.

Mize, who leads the Arunachal Anti-Drug Warriors, was arrested by Assam Police in Itanagar on May 20. He faces charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Arms Act following a violent incident in Sessa Rajgarh on May 15. The FIR alleges that a group of people assaulted residents, brandished firearms, and looted property. While police link Mize to the gunfire, his supporters claim he acted in self-defense during an anti-drug operation.

Khandu expressed his concern after reviewing the online reports, noting that while he cannot intervene in the legal proceedings of another state, he has urged authorities to prevent any further mistreatment of the activist. Civil society groups and student organizations have called for justice, suggesting that Mize's history of targeting drug networks may have led to his arrest.

A formal complaint has been submitted to the National Human Rights Commission by a resident of Namsai. The petition requests an independent probe into the allegations of abuse by personnel at the Bihpuria Police Station.
