Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has expressed serious concern regarding the alleged custodial torture of Gumin Mize, an anti-drug activist currently held by Assam police. Images and videos circulating online appear to show injury marks on Mize, prompting widespread outrage across the region.
Mize, who leads the Arunachal Anti-Drug Warriors, was arrested in Itanagar on May 20. Authorities in Assam linked his detention to a violent confrontation in the Lakhimpur district where gunshots were reportedly fired. Supporters of the activist maintain he was performing legitimate anti-drug work and acted in self-defense when confronted by traffickers.
Following his arrest, reports of physical abuse and a lack of medical care surfaced, leading to a formal complaint with the National Human Rights Commission. While local police have dismissed the circulating imagery as AI-generated, activists and student groups are demanding an independent investigation.
Khandu confirmed he reached out to the Assam government to ensure Mize receives fair treatment while in custody. Although he acknowledged the limitations of interfering with another state's legal proceedings, the Chief Minister praised Mize's history of assisting law enforcement in tracking down drug peddlers.
