Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh athletes claimed 15 medals at the 10th South Asian Karate Championship and 2nd U-14 South Asian Cup in Dhaka, Bangladesh. The event ran from July 15 to 19, sanctioned by the Asian Karate Federation and the World Karate Federation. The state squad returned with six gold, three silver, and four bronze medals.
Abab Sangdo, Khyoda Talik, and Tai Bengde grabbed gold in the Senior Men’s Team Kata. Additional gold winners included Himangsu Borah in U-14 Boys Individual Kata and his namesake Himanshu Borah in U-14 Boys Kumite -45 kg. Yamter Taso, John Dodum, and Tasing Nilling Liyu also took home gold medals.
Silver medalists included Tom Mara, Johny Mangkya, and Nabam Yani. Bronze winners were David Chetri, Phassang Chami, Kayu Kanu Bagang, and Nangram Tachung. Chief Minister Pema Khandu praised the results, linking them to the Chief Minister’s Athlete Coaching and Empowerment Scheme. He stated, "Champions are built through hard work, discipline and the courage to dream big. That’s exactly what Chief Minister’s Athlete Coaching and Empowerment Scheme (CM ACES) is all about."
Meanwhile, Kentu Lap from Anjaw district made history in Amman, Jordan. He became the first judoka from the state to win an international medal, securing bronze at the 2026 Asian Cadets and Junior Judo Championships. Hayuliang MLA Dasanglu Pul lauded the performance. APAKA president Kyoshi Yarda Niki and general secretary Sensei John Bagang also commended the athletes for their successful international showings.
